This natural laryngitis tea is the secret weapon that I use with voice students and performers when they are struggling with laryngitis!

As many of you know, I am not only a professional singer, but have been a vocal coach and musical director for many years. As a singer myself, and as someone who wants to keep the performers I work with vocally healthy, it is important to know what to do in those moments when a singer struggles with laryngitis.

Laryngitis is swelling and inflammation of the vocal cords. The best way to help the voice heal when you have laryngitis is always vocal rest. Talking, singing, and even whispering with laryngitis only irritates the vocal cords, even more, increases swelling, and delays healing. So be as quiet as you can be to allow the voice to heal.

When the moments happen that someone does need to use their voice, here is a special tea that works wonders to reduce swelling! It combines a good organic caffeine-free tea, cayenne pepper, and raw honey. I prefer to use a nice rooibos chai which is caffeine-free. The spices used in chai are anti-inflammatory and can help with swelling. ┬áSpices like clove and cinnamon are also anti-bacterial and anti-viral which is good if a virus has caused your vocal issues. I always use raw honey and organic cayenne pepper. Cayenne is a powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reducer and can significantly help with any swelling in the vocal cords. The cayenne doesn’t provide any flavor….just heat. And your mouth will adjust to that heat after a while.

  • 1 cup decaffeinated herbal tea
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1-2 tbsp raw honey


  • Brew the tea according to package directions
  • Add the honey and cayenne and stir well.
  • Sip tea slowly throughout the day for best benefits
